Watford City is excited about the Veterans Memorial Park dedication ceremony. A decade ago, an architect and engineer drew some ideas on a napkin. After planning, fundraising, and building the idea became a reality thanks to devoted individuals and lots of community support. This beautiful park will be formally dedicated on Saturday, July 15, at 4 p.m. CT, and it promises to be a great day!

Jerry Samuelson, a former McKenzie veteran service officer and Navy veteran, commented on the project during a recent phone call. "Before we started, we had 100 flagpoles made from oilfield pipe, five crosses representing each branch of the military, and a propane-powered Eternal Flame, which was quite costly," Samuelson said. The crew decided to enhance the park to honor McKenzie County veterans.

Flame

The park's substantial renovations honor servicemen and women. New flagpoles proudly fly the flags, symbolizing freedom. Samuelson's nephew donated an LED-powered Eternal Flame. The park has new concrete, sidewalks, and granite memorials honoring approximately 2,200 McKenzie County veterans. These names are thoughtfully arranged by decade to honor their service.

Individuals, corporations, and organizations donated to build the Veterans Memorial Park. Major donors supported the $3.5 million project. The Garrison Diversion Project, City of Watford City, McKenzie County, Rough Rider Fund, American Legion of Charitable Gaming, and former mayor and North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Brent Sanford each donated $100,000 to this great cause. In an inspirational gesture, the American Legion donated neighboring property, perhaps for a future expansion.

The American Bombshells

The dedication will be solemn and entertaining. American Bombshells will perform after the speakers. The modern-day Andrews Sisters, the American Bombshells, have inspired troops, wounded warriors, and veterans worldwide. Their all-American performance will be the perfect ending to their ten-year odyssey. Bring some chairs, and get ready for this fun show.

The Veterans Memorial Park dedication ceremony in Watford City marks a major milestone in honoring and thanking veterans. This remarkable endeavor will remember future generations of the community's perseverance. Congratulations to all involved with the project, and thanks for remembering our veterans!
