The crew at Mr. Electric, the electrical pros, went digging to uncover the real cost behind powering up those festive lights for Americans.

They dove into data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and crunched the numbers for different types of decorators—regular, heavy, and total enthusiasts. They figured the lights were shining bright for 7 hours a day, starting the day after Thanksgiving and going all the way to New Year’s Day.

Here's what they dug up for Montana:

Incandescent Lights

  • Regular Use: $19.80
  • Heavy Use: $211.98
  • Enthusiastic Use: $571.56

LED Lights

  • Regular Use: $2.93
  • Heavy Use: $28.12
  • Enthusiastic Use: $73.80

Making the switch to LED lights translates to substantial savings for Montanans. On average, the shift could save an individual decorator around $16.87. However, for those who go all-out with their decorations, the potential savings soar to an impressive $497.76.

So, making the swap not only amps up the holiday spirit but also keeps a little extra jingle in your pocket. LED lights aren't just about shining bright—they're shining smart and saving you a bundle, no matter if you're a casual decorator or the North Pole's neighbor!

P.S. Hawaii spends the most on holiday lights while Washington state spends the least.
