Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. Join your friends and neighbors at Williston's Out of The Darkness Walk this Saturday at Spring Lake Park. The Out of the Darkness initiative, which started in 2004, is centered on these community walks, which are held in hundreds of towns across the nation, including Williston.

Every Can Walk For Awareness

Out of The Darkness draws attention to suicide prevention, and mental health. This type of gathering provides people the confidence to talk openly about their personal ties to the topic and a day to advance mental health awareness. Most importantly, this is done alongside one other, in support of one another and in remembrance of those we have lost, including friends, relatives, neighbors, and coworkers.

One of the unique things you may see at this walk is people wearing different colors of beads. It might seem a bit out of place, but there is a special meaning. These are called honor beads; the color indicates how participants personally relate to the cause and aids in finding people who share a common perspective. These beads subtly show what each person attending may be going through.

Funds raised at this event are used for keeping a support group (Sounds of Silence) up and running at Gloria Dei Church. The Williston Survivor Day Event is also funded through walk dollars. Last year specifically, mental health picture books for all K-4 classrooms in the Williston Basin School District were purchased with walk dollars as well.

So, lace up those walking shoes, and meet at Spring Lake Park in Williston for the Out of The Darkness Walk. Registration starts at 10:00am, and the talk begins are 11:00am.
